WRAPPED TREES 1998 – Christo und Jeanne-Claude – art book

Wrapped Trees – In late November 1998, Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped 178 trees located in Berower Park around the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel.

Subject to ephemerality, the wrapped trees appeared like architecture – they became sculptures – concealed monuments of trees.

The light of trees

Peter Gartmann and Sabina Roth have created black-and-white and monochromatic art paintings of trees, frail and fragile –

they appear like delicate, spatial objects, spherical tree creatures –

full of lightness and complexity.

The trees become an abstraction, archaic and sacral –

symbolic of the conscious and subconscious, of the visible and invisible.

The landscapes in Ferdinand Hodler’s late works have always fascinated me. Their endless expanse into nothingness is painted eternity. In series and variations, he bestowed the beauty of the Swiss mountains and Lake Geneva on his major landscape paintings – they are self-images of Switzerland – expressions of modernism.

The beauty and radiance of the famous and talented women from Hollywood is what we dream of. The center of the American film industry is a myth, a dream factory, glittering and glamorous.

Natural beauties are made stars.

Today‘s motion pictures from Hollywood have nothing to do with our reality. They are retouched and arouse fantasies. No blemish should tarnish the beautiful, famous people. An effective mood is achieved in this way. This glamor stands out from everyday life and average people. The screen entices us to dream of these fascinating, beautiful women, these women whom we could never get close to in the real life.

Peter Gartmann has edited, changed and painted over in unusual colors a selection of films and anonymous paparazzi photos of the currently most successful women photographed innumerable times and given them this exaggerated glamor and radiant shine in the process.

Basel – Nachtlichter am Rhein

Text Andreas Bichweiler – Ramstein Optik, Basel

Fotos Sabina Roth + Peter Gartmann

The Oak – Sovereign among the Trees

edited by Urs Breitenstein, Bottmingen

colour photographs by Sabina Roth

black-and-white + panoramic photographs by peter gartmann

To talk about oaks and rocks

is to allude to the hardness of the wood

and is no less significant

than a discussion about the origins of the world

The tree is a symbol of constant regeneration, fertility, vitality and eternal life. It is a source of nourishment. And of protection. With the longing for rebirth and immortality rooted deeply in the human soul, for many cultures and religions, the tree has not surprisingly played a major role as an archetypical symbol of life. Especially the oak.
