The landscapes in Ferdinand Hodler’s late works have always fascinated me. Their endless expanse into nothingness is painted eternity. In series and variations, he bestowed the beauty of the Swiss mountains and Lake Geneva on his major landscape paintings – they are self-images of Switzerland – expressions of modernism.

The magnificent views of mountains and lakes without showing distance are a play between near and far – pictorial visions. The remarkable thing is that he often used only two colours – yellow and blue.

His massive, marvellous and monumental paintings illuminated by the sun have inspired me to push the limits of my pictures in this work, to simplify them more radically and abstractly – to re-interpret them in striking pop art.

HODLER – art paintings

Ferdinand Hodlers Landschaften in seinem Spätwerk haben mich schon immer fasziniert. Ihre unendlichen Weiten ins Nichts sind gemalte Ewigkeit. In Serien und Variationen verlieh er seinen grossen Landschaftsbildern die Schönheit der Schweizer Berge und des Genfersees – sie sind ein Selbstbild der Schweiz – Ausdruck des Modernismus.

Die Fernsicht auf Berge und Seen, ohne dabei Distanz zu zeigen, ist ein Spiel zwischen nah und fern – Bildvisionen. Das Besondere ist, dass er oft nur mit zwei Farben malte – gelb und blau.

Mich haben seine von der Sonne beschienenen, massiven, herrlichen, monumentalen Bilder dazu inspiriert, meine Bilder in dieser Arbeit noch mehr auf die Spitze zu treiben, sie radikaler und abstrakter zu machen, sie zu vereinfachen – sie in plakativer Pop-Art neu zu interpretieren.
